STEP 1 – FOOD FOR A FEW DAYS

A simple starting point for building a useful food store at home.

1. Start with three days
Don’t try to build a huge pantry overnight. Look at what your household normally eats and think about three days of breakfasts, lunches, dinners and snacks.

2. Build meals, not a collection of tins
Instead of buying random “emergency food”, think in meals. Pasta + sauce + tinned vegetables is a meal. Beans + tomatoes + rice can become a meal. Porridge oats + long-life milk + fruit gives you breakfast.

3. Include food that doesn’t need the fridge
Your food store becomes much more useful if at least some meals can be made entirely from cupboard ingredients. This is particularly helpful during a power cut or if your fridge/freezer develops a fault.

4. Use it and replace it
Your emergency food shouldn’t sit untouched waiting for disaster. Use it in your normal cooking and replace what you’ve used. That’s how you gradually build a deep pantry without wasting food.

Your first Quietly Prepared challenge

Plan three days of food using mostly things your household already eats.

Check your cupboards first.
Write down what’s missing.
Add a few items to your normal weekly shop.

That’s it. You’re more prepared than you were yesterday.
